Since the Taliban returned to power in August 2021, educational opportunities for girls in Afghanistan have been severely restricted, leaving millions without access to schooling. In response, ASDD launched the Empowering Minds programme in January 2024 to provide safe, high-quality learning opportunities for adolescent girls and young women.
Through in-person English classes, structured mentoring, and psychosocial support, the programme helps students build language skills, confidence, and resilience, opening doors to future educational and professional opportunities. What began with 16 students in 2024 has grown to 40 students in 2025, with classes held six days a week across two local branches. Each student receives study materials and monthly internet packages to support continued learning.
The programme’s impact is tangible: students have progressed from beginner to advanced English levels, and one participant was awarded an online scholarship to pursue a Bachelor of Commerce in India. With ongoing support, ASDD plans to expand in 2026 to reach 80 new students, train local female teachers, and continue providing mentorship and resources.
By supporting in-person English learning, the Empowering Minds programme gives Afghanistani girls a vital chance to continue their education and build a brighter future.
