Role Purpose
ASDD is seeking experienced English language teachers to serve as volunteer mentors for a cohort of early-career teachers based in Afghanistan. These mentees are graduates of ASDD’s English language and teacher training programmes and will begin teaching A2 -level English under supervision.
The purpose of the mentoring role is to provide professional guidance, pedagogical support, and encouragement, helping new teachers develop confidence, teaching skills, and reflective practice in a challenging and resource-constrained context.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide one-to-one, remote mentoring support to an assigned mentee in Afghanistan
- Offer guidance on lesson planning, teaching methodologies, and learner engagement for A2 -level English
- Support reflective practice through regular discussions of challenges, progress, and professional growth
- Share teaching resources and practical strategies suitable for low-resource and restricted environments
- Maintain regular communication (online meetings, messaging, or calls) as agreed with the mentee
- Provide constructive, culturally sensitive feedback in a supportive and respectful manner
- Maintain confidentiality and professional boundaries at all times
- Liaise with ASDD coordinators where necessary to support mentee development and safeguarding
Time Commitment
- Approximately 3 hours per week
- Fixed commitment of 6 months to ensure continuity, trust, and meaningful impact
Person Specification
Essential Criteria:
- Minimum 3 years’ experience in English language teaching
- Experience teaching beginner-level (A2) learners
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to provide constructive feedback in a supportive manner
- Commitment to mentoring, capacity-building, and educational inclusion
Desirable Criteria:
- Previous mentoring, coaching, or teacher-training experience
- TESOL, CELTA, DELTA, or equivalent qualification
- Experience teaching and mentoring learners from a range of cultural and conflict-affected contexts
