Project Overview

Since the Taliban’s gender apartheid regime banned girls over the age of 12 from attending school, the situation for women of Afghanistan has significantly deteriorated. Following the Taliban’s return to power in August 2021, the progress made in women’s rights over the past two decades has been completely undone. By April 2023, approximately 80% of school-age girls—around 2.5 million—were out of school, with many provinces lacking access to secondary education. This ban has led to a rise in child marriage, maternal mortality, poverty, depression, and suicide among Afghanistani women and girls.

Our Response

In response to this dire situation, ASDD launched the “Empowering Minds: ASDD’s Mission to Educate Girls in Afghanistan” program on January 1, 2024. This initiative, which began with the generous financial support of a kind-hearted Italian friend of ASDD, aims to provide Afghanistani adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) with pathways to higher education. Over this 12-month program, ASDD will offer English language classes, mentoring sessions, and psychosocial support to 16 young women, equipping them with the skills and confidence needed to pursue higher education abroad. Currently, in its 8th month, participants have progressed from A1 to B1 level English, and ASDD aims to expand this program to include 40 female students.

Key Project Components

  1. English Language Proficiency: We will provide in-person English classes to help AGYW achieve the proficiency required for admission to foreign universities.
  2. Mentorship and Guidance: Our mentoring program connects AGYW with proficient English speakers for language practice and guidance on university applications, scholarship searches, and interview preparation.
  3. Supportive Resources: Each participant will receive teaching materials (books) and an internet package to facilitate online learning and mentorship.

Budget

The total project budget is 10,800 euros, which breaks down as follows:

  • Local English teachers: 12 months * 2 teachers each month * 100 euros = 2,400 euros
  • Study materials (books): 10 euros per student * 40 students * 3 levels = 1,200 euros
  • Internet packages: 15 euros per student * 40 students * 12 months = 7,200 euros

With your support, we can ensure that these young women continue their education despite the oppressive regime and help us expand the program to benefit even more participants.
